Buffalo Soil Activator
After 40+ years of research and development, we have created our finest soil building and fertility remedy.
Biodynamic Source’s Buffalo Soil Activator and Field Spray was developed to honor the Buffalo gesture, the Great Spirit ruminant, that in relationship with all of life here in North America built the abundant fertility in the soils of this continent. In our work we have learned much, and are grateful for our time, with the Lakota, Dakota, Ute, (Sioux Nations) and other Native American peoples. They have been generous sharing their understandings of the world. They have guided us in understanding how dynamic the Buffalo has been in their lives for hundreds of generations. They have taught us how essential the Buffalo spirit has been in building the physical and meta-physical aspects of soils that allow us to thrive today. In this Buffalo preparation we merge the research and indications of Dr. Rudolf Steiner, Hugo Erbe and the work of the many biodynamic mentor farmers and preparation makers we have learned from. In particular it is Devon Strong of Four Eagles Farm, Siskiyou County, California and his life’s work that has helped us see how honoring the Buffalo, by making preparations with its gesture, is appropriate for our stewardship practices here in North America. Devon built a bridge for all of us in his groundbreaking work making the Biodynamic preparations with his herd of Buffalo. As all our work with biodynamic preparations is a form of prayer, this Buffalo Soil Activator and Field Spray is an evocation, an appropriate gesture for our stewardship. It is an acknowledgment to All of the Life that we co-create with in our effort to reestablish balance and help build abundant health for all.
Through this work and these preparations then we work to fine tune our efforts for our time and place to, as Rudolf Steiner said in his Spiritual Foundations for the Renewal of Agriculture (Lecture 6 )“…consult the whole universe when it comes to understanding plants.”
And From Devon Strong:
“From my viewpoint, based on native traditions on this land, it is easy and natural to choose making the Biodynamic preparations from animals representative of the archetype I identify as being “ of Earth” here, the bison.” …Though their physical awareness can be threatening to anyone who isn’t part of their lives, the thunder of a herd of buffalo as well as the blowing of their breath into the air is an elemental churning of the Earth’s upper layers; their digestion and manure makes the circle complete, joining earth to animal nature.”
- Devon Strong - A Lakota Approach to Biodynamics
This preparation contains in minute amounts, all of the biodynamic preparations, 500 to 508, as well as Buffalo Barrel Compost, 2 Hugo Erbe preparations, Horn Basalt, Horn Clay and rushed eggshells ++. It is pre-strirred twice during its making which is a form of pre-potentization. It is an excellent soil spray to use as the “first” spray when healing degraded ground, after fires and when beginning with biodynamics allowing for easier application for you, the grower. The effect is to sensitize or kick-start the soil so that it becomes receptive to the other biodynamic sprays. It only needs to be rhythmically stirred for 1-minute. This stirring is quite easily done by hand for small areas and lends itself to small farms and home garden applications.
HOW TO USE:
For large scale a suggested rate of application is 16 onces of Buffalo Prep to 10-20 gallons of pond/ stream water stir one minute then dilute into 200 gallons of similar water for 50 acres.
For smaller acreages add one 4 oz. jar to about 3-4 gallons of pond or river water then stir for one minute and spray. It can be diluted into 10-gallons of water for broader applications
Ratio: One 4 oz. jar of Buffalo Soil and Field Activator per 3 to 4 gallons of water (Up to 10 gallons) and good for up to 10 acres.

- Contains a wide range of beneficial soil building fungi, bacteria and growth promoting hormones that enhance root development + soil structure
- Brings balance to the soil-plant relationship
- Helps prevent insect, disease and fugal infestation
- First aid for plants under stress, drought or excess rain
- Application Process:
- Best stirred and applied in late afternoon or early evening
- 1. Dilute contents in 3+ gallons of water, in a five gallon bucket. (Use surface water if possible i.e. rain, lake, pond or stream. If using well or city water - make sure water is de-chlorinated- chlorinated water needs to be left out in open container to off gas chlorine for several hours.)
- 2. Stir the water vigorously in one direction until a deep vortex is formed, then switch directions and create another vortex, 1 minutes.
- 3. Apply/Spray in the late afternoon or early evening (just before sunset into twilight)
- 4. Ideally apply/spray at least 4 times a year
- Uses:
• Use at a rate of 1 oz. Per acre, Stirred in typical biodynamic fashion
• Use as a soil inoculant over land being converted to BD/organic management. • Use as a soil or foliar feed on all crops
• Excellent for all field crops, orchards/trees, vegetable and flower gardens
• Compost tea inoculant
• Essential for BD Seed Baths to inoculate seeds prior to planing
• We have found it beneficial to stir with BD#508 Equisetum and Horn Clay
Storage: Store in a cool dark place, away from electric or harmful fumes, until ready to use.
